A new childcare subsidy regime designed to make the service cheaper for about 1.2 million families is set to launch next Monday, but not everyone is a fan of the scheme.

Canadian expert in childcare economics, Emeritus Professor Gordon Cleveland, said Australia "could do an awful lot better" by following in Canada's footsteps and implementing a fixed $10-a-day fee.
