Information for JK-12 schools

The Chief Public Health Officer of the NWT, in consultation with the Minister of ECE, made the recommendation to cancel all JK-12 classes until April 14, 2020, as a precautionary measure to minimize the potential spread of COVID-19. Education bodies were notified that all students and staff could be dismissed as of March 16, 2020.

The Public Health Advisory from the CPHO regarding international travel and self-isolation applies to all school staff and students returning from travel.

ECE and education bodies continue to work together on business continuity planning in relation to JK-12 education system class cancellation.

All options for continued provision of educational services, including potential alternative learning plans, are currently being explored.

Information for licensed early learning and childcare programs

The Chief Public Health Officer (CPHO) is not currently recommending closure of early learning and childcare programs in the NWT. Daycares and day homes are critical for ensuring health care workers and other essential workers can continue providing critical care to residents.

Staff and children are required to follow healthy respiratory and hygiene practices. Children and staff returning from overseas must self-isolate for 14 days. Those returning from within Canada should self-monitor for symptoms. All sick children and staff should be sent home even if they have not travelled. Updates will be provided as the situation changes.

ECE has provided information to day home and daycare operators on behalf of the CPHO and will continue to do so as updates are provided.

Current information from the CPHO is available on the Health and Social Services website.
