There's no women's equality without universal child care

Reflecting on the history of the long struggle for women's equality in Canada, the lack of affordable, high quality child care has long been identified as a key barrier. As most Canadian women with young children are in the labour force today, Canada's relatively indifferent approach to child care continues to remind us that the fight for equality is far from won. As Canada's child care is clearly not "there yet",  have there been accomplishments? What challenges remain to be addressed to ensure that Canada's direction on child care is on the right path and sufficiently robust to lead to the universal child care program that has been so elusive.

Martha Friendly is the founder and executive director of the Childcare Resource and Research Unit (CRRU), Canada’s primary policy research institute on early childhood and child care (ECEC). Her lecture will focus on lack of affordable, high quality child care as a barrier to women’s equality, and the challenges that remain to be addressed on the path to the universal child care program that has been so elusive -- particularly in Canada, one of the richest countries in the world.
