EXCERPTS

MP Nathan Cullen joined 10 other B.C. NDP MPs in a press conference in Ottawa on February 6 to outline their concerns about the direction of childcare in the country and the province.

According to Cullen, the Conservatives' childcare plan, which involves paying parents of young children $100 per month, is ineffective and he believes it was a contributing factor to the childcare cuts announced by the province last month.

"The sad reality is that our young children here in B.C. are bearing the brunt of the Conservative government's failure to produce a real child care plan," Cullen said, adding that he would like to see the Conservatives do away with their plan and move towards a national child care plan that would put childcare on the same level as healthcare.

"There are centres across the Northwest that are in danger of closing. I think this is reaching a crisis level because people can no longer get affordable childcare spaces for their children….I don't see why the government can spend billions of dollars on transport planes for our military, but nickel and dime people on childcare."
