Echoing one of the promises Prime Minister Stephen Harper made in his successful election campaign, an Alberta Tory leadership candidate says his government would give parents with young children in day care $100 a month.

"Just like the federal program, only this will be a provincial program on top of that to help parents make the choices that they think are best for their kids," Victor Doerksen said on Monday after announcing his leadership platform.

Doerksen said his plan would put $300 million into the hands of families. But Alberta's income-tested child-care subsidies would be reduced by the amount of money parents received under the new program.

Doerksen's platform announcement also included a plan for an added $25 million to help cover the cost of sports and recreational activities for the children of low-income families receiving the Child Health Benefit.
