EXCERPTS

There are times when headlines and stories don't quite match and we tend to live with it. However, yesterday's B2 headline, Region's Child-care Stand 'A Travesty,' is a real stretch. In fact, it distorts what the story actually said.

It is drawn from a day-care worker's comment about the situation generally, I believe, not Waterloo Region specifically. To be clear, the region is spending every penny from the province to maintain the province's Best Start program.

The reality is that there is not enough money. I am not aware of any other municipality being forced to fund the province's initiative, although there may be some quietly doing what we are doing.

The headline is not helpful as it is the kind of misinformation that allows the real source of the problem to be shifted and confuses the public looking for accountability.

We have had a long and proud history of supporting quality day care and that is why we are choosing not to paper over the problem temporarily with local funds, but to stand up openly and tell the senior governments that they need to ensure adequate and fair funding for the creation of quality child care.
