EXCERPTS

Workers at about 300 government-run day-care centres were on a one-day strike Friday over pay equity, affecting 20,000 children.

The dispute involves unionized day-care employees represented by the Confederation of National Trade Unions. The union had hoped the dispute with the government would have been resolved last fall.

Parents have known for a month that the strike was coming and have had an opportunity to make alternative arrangements for their children.

Non-unionized government day-care centres and government centres affiliated with another union are not part of Friday's strike.

The government has argued that because most of the employees are women, it is difficult to find a pay-equity comparison.
