Each session is structured with a framework of collaboration and reflective practice. The sessions will have facilitated provocations, and will allow time for sharing, reflection, identification of next steps and simple goal setting.

Session 1: Children as Constructors of Learning

Facilitated by Gretchen Reynolds, Algonquin College & Joanne Saunders, Acorn Early Learning Centre

This session will give participants an opportunity to discuss and share their experiences and perspectives in regards to the implementation of projects, emergent curriculum and using the environment as an 'educator'. Topics could extend to outdoor environments and curriculum, documentation and the implementation of early learning frameworks.

Session 2: Technology in Early Learning

Facilitated by Meagan Bell, Kanata Research Park Family Centre

This session will be an opportunity for participants to discuss how technology (emails, computers, cameras, internet, websites, blogs, webcams, smart boards, tablets, webinars, etc.) is being used in early learning settings in our community, and abroad. Participants can also examine ways in which technology is used to connect children and families to the program and their larger communities as well. This session is for individuals with an interest in technology, at all levels- there is no experience needed.

Workshop 3: Early Childhood Educators as Learners

Facilitated by Leslie Kopf Johnson, Algonquin College & Lisa Lalonde, Kanata Research Park Family Centre.

This session is an opportunity for participants to explore how we as ECE's can extend our own professionalism-in both traditional and non-traditional ways. Discussions surrounding different tools (E-portfolios, webinars, mentoring, community ambassadors, postgraduate certificates, degrees, international opportunities) as well as examining the difference of in house professional development versus external sources professional development.

Workshop 4: Developing a Positive Organizational Climate & Culture

Facilitated by Kathy Knight Robinson, Andrew Fleck Child Care Services & Karen Cole Thrasher, Global Child Care Services

This session is an opportunity for participants to discuss different ways they can contribute to the development of a positive organizational climate in their own early learning environments. Exploring the idea of collaborative culture will be a focus as the participants discuss ways we can work together to develop this as a broader early learning system in our community.

Description:

The Global Social Governance Field Group at the Balsillie School of International Affairs in Waterloo, Ontario, is pleased to present, " Toward a Global Social Protection Floor," a Symposium being held at BSIA on April 24-26, 2013.

The Symposium brings together distinguished scholars from a variety of disciplines and regions of the world, as well as international policy intellectuals to discuss this ambitious initiative. It presents an opportunity to hear from prominent thinkers about the possibilities, the implications, and the challenges of constructing a new global governance architecture to implement such an initiative and to ensure its success.

The aim is to stimulate interdisciplinary research and the development of a network linking Canadian and foreign researchers interested in this initiative in particular, and global social governance in general.The Symposium opens on Wednesday, April 24, at 7:00 pm with a Signature Lecture by Isabel Ortiz, Director of the Global Social Justice Program at the Initiative for Policy Dialogue. The title of her lecture is: "A Global Social Protection Floor for an Inclusive Recovery." The Signature Lecture is organized in partnership with the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI).
