Abstract:

This descriptive and methodological report features the results of a survey on the needs and preferences of families regarding daycare conducted by the Institut de la statistique du Québec for the ministère de la Famille, des Aînés et de la Condition féminine. The results of this survey made in 2004 bring up to date the data collected in 2000 on the use and preferences of Québec families with regard to daycare services and define these needs in more detail as well as the types of services that could be offered. The 2004 survey provides further information on the realities and preferences of families, based on regional particularities and the work situation of the parents.

The data collection took place between September 14 and November 12, 2004. Among the 20,594 families selected to participate in this survey, and including at least one child under five as of September 30, 2004, and residing in Québec, 14,389 answered a questionnaire by phone.

The report describes, in turn, the portrait of families with children under five, families' use of daycare services, the interest shown by families for $7 a day daycare, the regular and irregular use of daycare services, families' daycare preferences, daycare services and atypical work, the improvements desired for daycare services in 2004, the reasons for using daycare services, and, lastly, the methodological aspects of the survey.

The findings of the survey are presented in two volumes: the descriptive analysis of the table of results in the first (descriptive and methodological report), and the table of results in the second.
