An advocate for $10-a-day daycare is calling a couple recent announcements from the Ministry of Children and Families ‘a bit of a joke’.

“We need far more than 1,800 new spaces. That could be used up just in Surrey alone.”

Sharon Gregson says the new spaces won’t affect soaring child care costs at all and any claim by Minister Stephanie Cadieux to the opposite shows a lack of understanding.

On the ministry putting out an interactive map for parents to find daycare spaces, Gregson says that too misses the mark.

“I looked at the map it is saying that some places have no spaces when actually they are planning to have vacancies in the summer. They have some incorrect contact information. Basically it is letting parents know where spaces are that they can’t afford. A map is so far down on the priority list that it is a shame to see money spent on that.”

Gregson says new cash from the federal government for child care will begin to flow next year and the province should use it to help roll out her $10-a-day plan.
