P.E.I. isn't doing enough to ensure the future stability of Island childcare centres, says the president of the Union of Public Sector Employees.

Shelley Ward told CBC News Monday the province is rushing through changes to put kindergarten into the school system next fall without enough thought given to the impact on daycares.

Many childcare centres are losing staff to the school system in the move, and there are few graduates in the pipeline to fill the staffing gap.

Furthermore, some of the daycare funding is being redirected to the school system.
"The funding that was going to the early childhood education centres, which was the kindergarten subsidy, is now being taken out of those centres," she said.

Ward said the combination of the loss of staff and subsidy threatens the future of some centres.
