Despite a $13.5-million boost to licensed daycares announced by the province, far more must be done to fully address child care both in Alberta and nationally, said activists at a downtown rally yesterday.

The rally at the Harry Hays building was staged to call for a national child-care plan and provincial funding for before- and after-school care.

Diane McKean, chairwoman of the lobby group School Age Wants A Turn, said Alberta is the only province not to offer parents child-care subsidies for children up to age 12.

"Once your child enters Grade 1, all of those supports are totally gone," she said.
