DESCRIPTION:

Nova Scotia Premier Rodney MacDonald is promising to fight Ottawa for more day-care money.

The federal government told the province last week it will only get funding for the first two years of the five-year, $137-million commitment made by the last Liberal government.

"The federal government has made a commitment to $1,200 and that's important from their perspective, they were elected on that. But I want to see a blended approach," MacDonald said.

Nova Scotia needs more child-care seats, he says, so it's important that both parents and the province receive money. But he refuses to say how much he'd like his government to get.

"That'll happen during the negotiations process. We'll put our best foot forward and we'll live with what comes out of it."
