EXCERPTS

Jean Charest had few words of encouragement for the future of universal $5-a-day day care on Sunday.

The premier says his government is dedicated to ensuring there are enough places for children needing daycare and that he agrees with the idea of providing inexpensive daycare for all Quebecers.

However, the premier says the money to fund those spaces has to come from somewhere.

The Liberals have already floated the idea of having richer Quebecers pay more for public day care.

Saturday, thousands of parents, children and day-care workers took to the streets of Montreal demanding the universal $5-a-day system be left alone.
